Check the diary before the temperature drops
Look up when the boiler was last serviced and when its next service is due. A service can be arranged at any time of year; the useful point is to leave time to discuss any findings before heavy winter use. If the boiler is already showing a fault, book the appropriate assessment rather than waiting for a routine maintenance slot.
Use the controls you already have
Check that the time and heating schedule still suit the household. A programmer sets when heating is requested, while thermostats and radiator controls manage temperature in different ways. Read the instructions for your controls if you are unsure what a setting does. Energy Saving Trust explains how these controls work together; you do not necessarily need a new boiler to improve how the heating is managed.
Notice what happens when the heating runs
During normal use, note rooms that remain uncomfortable, unusual sounds or any displayed boiler message. Record whether the issue affects all radiators, a single room or hot water as well. These observations are more useful to an engineer than a guessed diagnosis. Do not remove boiler covers or attempt work on gas components. If the manufacturer’s user instructions do not make the next step clear, ask for professional help.
Avoid one-size-fits-all temperature advice
A combi boiler and a system serving a hot water cylinder do not necessarily use the same settings. Changing a boiler setting can affect space heating, stored hot water or both, depending on the installation. Ask for advice specific to your appliance and system rather than copying a temperature from an unrelated online example. Comfort, health needs and the system’s design all matter.
Get the information ready before calling
Have your postcode, boiler make and model, last service date and a description of the issue available. Mention a displayed fault code and whether you currently have heating or hot water. For planned work, explain preferred dates and access arrangements. For a current loss of heating, call to check availability; an online enquiry does not reserve an urgent visit.
Choose servicing or repairs
Book planned boiler servicing if the appliance is due maintenance. Use boiler repairs if it has a fault. L&B covers Warsash, Locks Heath, Fareham, Southampton and Portsmouth, with appointments agreed directly. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe place rather than waiting for a website enquiry.
