Start with the fault, not an age cut-off
An older boiler is not automatically beyond repair, and a newer one can still develop a fault. The useful first step is to understand what has failed and what it would take to put it right. A diagnosis turns a vague concern about reliability into an actual comparison between repair work and replacement. Avoid treating a particular birthday as a rule that every boiler must be changed.
Ask what the repair would achieve
Find out which work and parts are needed, whether parts are available and what the quoted repair covers. Tell the engineer about previous faults and whether the same symptom has returned. A single repair after years of reliable operation is a different decision from repeated disruption with unresolved problems. Keep the service and repair records together so you can make that distinction using evidence.
Compare complete quotations
A replacement price needs to cover the installation you actually require. Boiler position, flue arrangements, controls, pipework and preparation of the heating circuit can affect the work. A like-for-like swap and a conversion from stored hot water to a combi should not be compared as though they are identical. Ask what is included, what might change after a survey and how heating or hot water interruption will be managed.
Think about how the household uses hot water
The right replacement depends on the property and its demand. Tell the installer how many bathrooms may be used at once, whether you have a cylinder, and whether an extension or extra bathroom is planned. The old boiler’s rated output is useful information, but it is not a complete design brief. Improving controls or resolving a wider circulation issue may also form part of the discussion.
Make a decision you can explain
Put the repair scope, total replacement scope, expected disruption and guarantee conditions alongside one another. Be cautious about fixed promises of savings without an assessment of the current system and how you use it. If you are also considering a different heating technology, get advice on the wider options before committing to a like-for-like replacement.
Arrange the right starting appointment
If the boiler is faulty, start with fault finding. If you already want to explore a replacement, request an installation assessment. L&B works from Warsash across Locks Heath, Fareham, Southampton and Portsmouth. Include the make, model, symptoms and any planned changes to the property.
